If your business is not showing up on Google, it is almost always one of a short list of fixable things: your Google Business Profile is not verified or not complete, your name, address, and phone are inconsistent, you have too few reviews, your category is wrong, or you are simply far from the person searching. Google ranks local results on three factors, and once you know them, the fix is usually obvious. Here is how to diagnose it.
How does Google decide who shows up?
Google is refreshingly clear about this. Per its own local ranking guidance, local results are ranked on three things:
- Relevance: how well your profile matches what someone searched for.
- Distance: how far you are from the person searching.
- Prominence: how well known you are, which Google bases partly on your reviews and the links to your website.
Almost every “I cannot find my business” problem is a relevance or prominence gap, and both are things you control.
Is your Google Business Profile verified and complete?
This is the number one reason a business is invisible. An unverified or unclaimed profile generally will not show up in Search or Maps at all, so claiming and verifying it comes first. Then fill it out completely: the right primary category, hours, services, a real description, and photos. Google literally tells you that complete, accurate information helps it match and rank you.
If you work out of your home or your truck, you do not need to show your address. You can run a service-area business, hide the street address, and set the areas you serve. That is exactly how our own profile is set up: a verified service-area profile covering Metro Detroit, so we do this for a living, not just in theory.
Are your name, address, and phone consistent everywhere?
Google cross-checks your business details across the web to trust that you are real and where you say you are. If your name, address, or phone number is different on your website, your Facebook page, Yelp, and old directory listings, that inconsistency drags you down. Pick one exact format and make it identical everywhere, and clean up any duplicate profiles, which can also suppress or split your ranking.
Do you have enough recent reviews?
Reviews feed the “prominence” factor directly, and they are one of the strongest local ranking signals you can influence. They also decide whether someone clicks you once you do appear: about 86 percent of consumers read reviews on Google (BrightLocal, 2025), more than any other platform. A business with a handful of old reviews will lose to a competitor with a steady stream of recent ones. Ask happy customers, every week.
Did your profile get suspended, or is it brand new?
If your business vanished suddenly, check for a suspension. Common triggers are stuffing keywords into your business name, an address that breaks Google’s rules (a PO box or virtual office), or a burst of rapid edits. Fix the cause and request reinstatement.
If the profile is brand new, give it time. A fresh listing takes a while to earn trust and prominence, and reviews and consistent information are what speed that up. New is not broken, it is just early.
What if you show up, just not high enough?
Then it is usually distance and competition. You cannot move your business closer to every searcher, and shops that sit nearer you in a dense area have a proximity edge. What you can do is win on the two factors you control: make your profile more relevant (right category, complete info, services) and more prominent (steady reviews, a fast, local-SEO-ready website that Google can connect to your profile).
That last part matters because Google uses your website to understand and trust your business. If you want help, that is exactly what our local SEO and web design work is built to do, and you can see how we approach a local market on our Detroit web design page.
